Decor Inspiration: Greece
Alan and I took off to Greece after we got engaged in the Fall and spent a few days in Oia on Santorini and then another few days on Milos before our last couple days in Athens. When I travel nowadays, I now like to look at the design styles that are prominent in the area and see how we can incorporate some of that design style into our home. Our master bathroom has been needing some TLC since I moved in, and its one room that still has traces of the builder-grade-grey, but also has been low priority. The previous owner never used a level when hanging anything, and the master bathroom has so many little holes that are nowhere close to being level or usable to hang anything so its a project for the new year. I’ve been wanting to center the room around Greek inspirations and having a few photos of our favourite spots in Greece.

Here’s how to design your home with Greek-inspired elements, including practical tips for homeowners and renters, and a DIY project to bring the look to life.
Key Features of Greek Style Design
Whitewashed Walls
White is a defining element of Greek interiors, reflecting the natural sunlight of the Mediterranean. This clean and minimal base creates a sense of openness and tranquility.Blue Accents
Evoking the Aegean Sea and Greek skies, blue is often paired with white in Greek design. Use shades ranging from deep cobalt to soft sky blue in decor, textiles, and furniture.Natural Materials
Greek design emphasizes materials like stone, wood, and terracotta. These elements add texture and earthiness, creating a balance between rustic and refined.Simple Lines and Shapes
Furniture and decor in Greek style are often minimalistic, with clean lines and functional designs. Curved forms and arches are also prevalent, echoing ancient Greek architecture.Outdoor Living
Greece’s design ethos celebrates outdoor spaces, from shaded patios to breezy terraces. A connection to nature is central to the aesthetic.
Incorporating Greek Style in Your Home
For Homeowners:
Walls and Floors: Opt for white walls with stone or ceramic tile floors. If you want a rustic vibe, consider exposed stone walls or wood beams.
Kitchen: Use open shelving to display simple ceramics, such as white or blue dishes. Incorporate a marble or wood countertop for an authentic touch.
Furniture: Look for wooden furniture with a distressed finish or rattan for a coastal feel. Add seating with linen cushions in neutral or blue tones.
Bathrooms: Incorporate mosaic tiles, marble sinks, or a freestanding tub for a spa-like Greek retreat.
For Renters:
Textiles: Use Greek-inspired textiles like striped or patterned rugs, curtains, or cushions in white and blue tones.
Artwork: Hang prints of Greek landscapes, ancient ruins, or abstract pieces in blue and white hues.
Decor: Add touches like terracotta pots, olive branches, or ceramic vases. Look for affordable Greek-style lanterns for ambient lighting. DIY yourself a terracotta style pot with Geneva’s method.
Temporary Wall Treatments: Use peel-and-stick tiles with Mediterranean patterns to create an accent wall or backsplash.
DIY Project: Create a Whitewashed Wall Finish
Whitewashed walls are a hallmark of Greek design, providing a textured, light-reflecting backdrop. Here’s how to recreate this look with a simple DIY technique:
Materials Needed:
White latex paint (matte or eggshell finish)
Water
Large paintbrush or sponge
Drop cloths
Painter’s tape
Bucket
Sandpaper (optional)
Steps:
Prepare the Wall
Clean the surface and ensure it is free of dust or grease. If the wall is already painted, you may lightly sand it to help the whitewash adhere better.Mix the Whitewash
In a bucket, combine equal parts of water and white latex paint to create a diluted mixture. Adjust the ratio for a more opaque or translucent finish.Protect the Area
Cover floors and adjacent walls with drop cloths, and use painter’s tape to protect trims or edges.Apply the Whitewash
Using a large paintbrush or sponge, apply the whitewash in long, uneven strokes. Work in sections to create a natural, textured effect. Allow some of the original wall color to show through for an authentic look.Blend and Refine
Use a damp cloth or sponge to soften any harsh lines while the paint is still wet. This creates a weathered, rustic finish.Layer for Depth
Once the first coat dries, apply additional layers if needed to achieve the desired texture and opacity.Finishing Touches
Allow the wall to dry completely before arranging furniture or decor. Pair the whitewashed wall with blue accents or natural wood elements for a complete Greek-inspired look.
Designing your space around Greek style is about creating a space that feels bright, airy, and connected to nature. Whether you’re embracing the look through architectural changes, decor, or simple DIY projects like whitewashed walls, this timeless aesthetic offers a sense of escape and relaxation. Even in a rental, small touches like textiles, artwork, and Mediterranean-inspired decor can bring the beauty of Greece into your everyday life. Embrace the essence of the Aegean and transform your home into a serene Mediterranean retreat!
